Registering a death

 Registering a death in Aberdeen

Registration of a death

All deaths in Scotland should be registered within 8 days (or as soon as possible if death certificate is delayed). The Funeral Director is not normally a qualified informant to the Registrar. The registration should therefore be done by a near relative, Executor, person present at time of death, or householder, or person taking responsibility for arranging the funeral.

The Registrar in Aberdeen is at Marischal College, Broad Street, AB10 1AB. An appointment must be made by calling 01224 522616. A death can be registered at any Registrar in Scotland. Other registrars (contact details in phone book) should be contacted if being used to confirm appointment arrangements.  Since the COVID-19 restrictions, Registration is not done face to face, but by telephone.  For further details visit their website

Registrar's in Aberdeenshire may be contacted on 01467 468468.

You should have available for the registrar the Medical Cause of Death Certificate (Since COVID restrictions this has been e-mailed by the Doctors), along with the deceased's birth and marriage certificates if applicable.

In the event that the birth or marriage certificate is not available, the following information must be supplied to the Registrar:

  • Full name of deceased (including maiden name)
  • Occupation - and whether still working
  • Date of birth
  • Full postal address including postcode, and how long at this address
  • Former address if less than 10 years
  • Country of birth
  • Marital status
  • Spouse(s) name, maiden name and occupation
  • Date of birth of surviving spouse
  • Deceased's parents' full names, maiden name of mother, occupations and whether still surviving
  • Name and address of GP
  • NHS number - if available

The Registrar will e-mail the Form 14 to us as your Funeral Director.

An abbreviated death certificate (does not show cause of death) is issued without cost.

Full Extract of Registration (death certificate) £10 per copy - various (original) copies may be required for banks, insurance and pensions etc.  These will be sent to you by post or they can be collected by appointment.

The Registrar will also offer their "Tell Us Once" service.  This enables them to notify certain organisations on your behalf.  To access this service you should have available (where applicable) the deceased's

  • National Insurance number
  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • Disability blue badge
  • Accord Card
  • Details of Public Sector Pension

Deaths in England must be Registered in England, unless the coroner is involved. For deaths abroad, or for people being taken abroad, extensive documentation is required and varies between countries. We can advise fully on these matters, and make arrangements for repatriation to or from the U.K.
